Well, I was right…you never know what is going to happen in the Marshalls. Maybe you’ll wake up one morning with half of your house on fire because the kitchen is burning down and your room is connected to the kitchen. That’s actually not a maybe…that is a definitely! So I woke up two days ago to pounding on my door, screaming TAYLOR, GET UP, GET OUT. When I opened my eyes and looked toward the door the majority of the wall directly in front of me was on fire. How I didn’t smell anything or wake-up, that is beyond me; but nonetheless – it was a real fire. I proceeded to leap out of bed – or off the floor rather – and run outside making sure to jump over the entrance to my house, due to the fact that it too was on fire! By the time I got out Jeffrey and Tari had managed to get most of the big flames out and were working on getting all the smoldering wood pieces out as well.
The night before Lona and I had cooked two loaves of bread, intending to eat them for breakfast. We cooked everything during dinner and took the fire out of the oven at around 9 o’clock. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary – and we all went to bed around 11. I got up to get a drink at around 2 and still…nothing seemed strange and there was no smoke or anything in the kitchen. Come 7 am however, the entire oven was on the ground in ashes and the majority of the cook house was on fire. NO idea how it happened. Maybe a flame stayed lit through the night and when big wind came in the morning relit itself…who knows. Bye bye bread for breakfast though, and hello work all day to rebuild my house and the kitchen.
Not too much of my stuff was ruined, thankfully, only a couple pieces of clothes hanging on the wall and some plastic things (buckets and water holders) that were also in the area. By the end of the day the kitchen was looking decently normal again, with the exception of the destroyed rug and the blackened tins. I really wish I had thought to take pictures of the incident, because it was a trueeee disaster. Thankfully no one was hurt and hopefully now without an oven that won’t be happening again in the near future.
Ok, well that is all the update I have for now. I start another week of school tomorrow…woo hoo. Maybe some teachers will come this week??? Who knows. Probably not, but you can always hope right?
Hope all is well in the states…thinking about everyone lots and can’t wait to be back in just 5 short months. ☺
